While I have zero experience with dating coaches outside of watching the movie Hitch, when +Harmony Eichsteadt reached out to suggest a #CMGRHangout episode focused around her experience as a dating coach and how it relates to community organizing—I jumped on it. Partially because we sometimes get caught up over-talking the same subjects, but also because the more she explained it the more I realized just how many similarities there are.
To quote Harmony, because really it’s her brainchild here, “Building relationships with a community and with the people in it follows the same path as building a relationship with a romantic partner. That includes things like: calling people the next morning, interacting with people differently the more you know them, listening as well as talking and being vulnerable and authentic.” She even pointed out that “Sometimes it just doesn’t work out and you’re not compatible, but also sometimes you get dumped or have to dump someone.”
